By: TEFL Teaching English Abroad- Where Do I Start?
[…] When I was offered the job in The Maldives the first thing I did was search on FB for expatriate groups and I found loads of people and even other colleagues I’d be working with! There’s pretty much an expat group for every country, and sometimes you’ll find ones specific to your nationality like for me I found “Brits in Italy” and “Brits in Maldives” where people were very supportive and helped me when feeling homesick etc. […]

I think all of this is totally normal. I've been an expat for 4 years and still have days like this. My husband is a go-getter though and I'm not allowed to wallow for very long, hence the bucket list idea! I definitely think meeting others who are newer to this than you can help. Have a great day showing her the ropes!

Hi Amy! Thanks for taking the time to come and look at my newbie site! You're definitely right about needing to get out. I love the idea of a Maldives bucket list! I must look into more things for me to do here. It's times like those I wish my boyfriend was here so we could organise things together and get up together and go explore! But I'm a strong girl and I just need to get a grip a little bit XD I wrote this in the morning, and coincidently a new girl moved into my apartment complex in the afternoon, completely culture-shocked and nervous. Suddenly whatever I felt vanished immediately as I answered all hundreds of her questions and talked about the locals and the company we both work for. She had cried quite a bit when she arrived, I felt so sad for her. Going to show her around a bit tomorrow which will be great for me too.

I've definitely felt like this at times. I've also got a chronic illness of which one of the symptoms is extreme fatigue and sometimes I just find the general hustle and bustle of life in a new place can be exhausting. On the whole though, I'd say the worst of my mopey days happen(ed) because of loneliness/boredom. Being at home in the UK without my husband has left me feeling the same. In fact, although my friends are here, I have some days when I just want to hide away on the sofa all day. I always feel better when I get out and about though. Perhaps you need to force yourself up and out. Do you have a Maldives bucket list? Plan one thing to do each Friday maybe, something to drag yourself out for.
