I'm sorry things aren't going so well. If you need to splurge out definitely visit a resort for a few days or an uninhabited island- you won't see any trash there. There just doesn't seem to be any incentive to look after the island but there isn't the foundation either- no bin man is going around collecting trash and taking it to be recycled. It's a bit like parts of Kenya I visited, everything just gets set on fire. Lack of education? Probably need some environmental NGOs over there.

I'm here at the moment and can say that you will see rubbish everywhere. The beach (apart from the one in front of palazzo lamu hotel) is full of plastic bottles; cans; clothes... you name it. I walked ask the way to the top of the island and the rubbish is everywhere. There are almost nothing opened and to be honest it looks like a ghost town. It looks like the locals don't look after the island and I've been to 3 so far and the scene seems to repeat itself.

Hi! Unfortunately there is trash on pretty much all of the local islands. Not loads of trash, and it certainly doesn't make the holiday any less relaxing! Gan island was lovely, however I had some wonderful snorkelling experiences around Thulusdhoo and Maafushi islands, which are much closer to the capital and therefore do not involve a domestic flight.

Hi Sarah, nice blog! I'm planning my trip to the Maldives and I would like to ask you a few things since you are a pro! Which is the best atoll in your opinion? I was thinking about Gan island cause it offers cheap but nice accomodation with private beach, but I've read that there is a lot of trash everywhere on the beach. Is that true? The main purpose of the trip is snorkelling and relaxing. Thanks! Serena

Hi Sarah, what a wonderful video of the turtle and the kissing fish. It really behaved like an angel, but it is in fact a Double-saddled Butterflyfish.
