Whatever That Thing is that you’ve Been Meaning to do- go and do it for gods sake.
It took me 6 months to finally go to the office and sort out my residency (currently living in Canary Islands, Spain) and sign up with a doctor. 6 whole months I kept saying, ‘ahhhh I really must go and do That Thing’- ugggghhhh. You just don’t NEED that in your life. I know paperwork and stuff (even more so in a foreign country) is boring as hell and uses up an entire day, but you’ll feel lighter.
Maybe you’ve Been Meaning to exercise more or eat more vegetables or work on yourself or WHATEVER. The problem with That Thing is it turns into a Big Thing.
Daunting. Huge. Effort. Boring. Where do you even start, right? Let’s look at this way: we’ve already started. We’ve acknowledged we’re a little ‘ugh’ about the Thing. How can we slowly –practice– incorporating it into everyday life? Swap frozen chips for hand cut sweet potato? Cycle to work?
The funny thing is, the Boring Thing which you know you Ought To Do might turn into something you LOVE to do. I tried to establish a FOCUSED one hour per day to use on yoga or writing or reading, whatever I fancied (small steps n all), but I came to dread the one hour. I kept putting it off, and then I had to go to work… and then it was evening and I was tired… why couldn’t I find ONE MEASLY HOUR to focus? Because I made it too daunting. Too forced.
Too Boring.
Instead, practice incorporating the one hour into your life. So to build my home yoga practice, I practiced getting into a routine of getting lunch on the go and doing a quick 20-30 minute practice before it was ready. Some days I didn’t do it- THATS OKAY- IT’S A PRACTICE(!!) Don’t get angry at yourself. Remember when your mum was angry cus you didn’t clean up your room? Or the teacher cus you forgot the homework? Cleaning and homework and people getting angry at you was so damn boring. Don’t make it boring.
It could be the best thing you’ve ever done.
You got this.
